Stephen Urbauer's Grateful Dead Podcast #10 - 6/8/74 Oakland Stadium
Wednesday Feb 18, 2015
Wednesday Feb 18, 2015
Hiya Folks!
Yes - that's Phil Lesh from this show in the picture. I think that pretty much sums up what you're getting into here!
Summer '74 stadium show, letting the Wall of Sound out of its cage!
The highlight of this show is the Playin' jam - which is completely unhinged at times.
This is a high-quality Soundboard, with one exception: a couple songs on this recording were AUD patches (unidentified), so I put one in to show the clarity of the PA. It's a mono recording, but the range of it is excellent - and does a fine job of demonstrating just exactly how good the Wall sounded.
The Music:
Scarlet Begonias, Greatest Story Ever Told, China Cat Sunflower->I Know You Rider, Around and Around, Ship of Fools (Audience recording), Playin' In the Band->Wharf Rat->Playin' Reprise, Casey Jones->One More Saturday Night

Stephen Urbauer's Grateful Dead Podcast #9 Part 2 - 7/12/90 RFK Stadium - Set 2
Tuesday Feb 10, 2015
Tuesday Feb 10, 2015
Hiya Folks!
This is the 2nd set of my first show - 7/12/90, RFK Stadium in Washington, DC.
It's a Big One. So Much Phil. Dark Star... Man oh man.
Post-drums is a big 'cover-fest', really a great time.
The Music:
"Take a Step Back"->Box of Rain->Victim or the Crime->Foolish Heart->Dark Star->Drums->Space->All Along the Watchtower->Dear Mr Fantasy->Hey Jude Reprise->Touch of Grey E) The Weight
This is a 'full spectrum' set of music folks - it runs Very Deep, and comes out on the other side like a shiny new penny. It's not without warts/flubs - but that's all not really relevant or important on any level - the band is Really Playing here.

Stephen Urbauer's Grateful Dead Podcast #9 - 7/12/90 RFK Stadium - Set 1
Tuesday Feb 10, 2015
Tuesday Feb 10, 2015
Hiya Folks!
This one is a two-parter. My first show - 7/12/90, RFK Stadium in Washington, DC.
What a day! Whew. Hot Hot Hot!!! Then the clouds started rolling in, and we knew we were all in for it weather-wise. Bad Weather = Hot Show! This was no exception.
I couldn't bring myself to truncate this one, so I'm presenting the whole thing in two podcasts - this is set 1, set 2 will follow.
The Music:
Let the Good Times Roll, Feel Like A Stranger, Bertha, Just A Little Light, Queen Jane Approximately, Stagger Lee, Tennessee Jed->The Music Never Stopped
Garcia has technical difficulties during Bertha, most of his solo is inaudible - but you'll know it when he comes back.
This is a 'NicksMix' matrix, a tad heavy on the AUD recording maybe - but it sounds great overall.
Hope you enjoy, stick around for the 2nd set!

Stephen Urbauer's Grateful Dead Podcast #8 7/8/78 Red Rocks

Thursday Feb 05, 2015
Hiya Folks!
Red Rocks - if you've been there, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, you should go there this summer if at all possible.
This is from the second of the band's first two-night stand at this fabled venue - and I think it's safe to say that they were digging it as much as we do.
This is certainly once of the 'all time great' G.D. shows, capped off by one of the coolest encore's they ever did.
While they certainly have lost some of the tight professionalism of '77 by this time - they've replaced it with sheer animal energy, a fair trade in my opinion! ;)
We're nearing the end of the Keith and Donna era here, and I think it's pretty obvious why - especially when compared to what Brent Mydland would bring to the table less than a year from this show.
That said - this is still one of my favorite shows!
The music:
Promised Land->Deal, Estimated Prophet->The Other One->Eyes of the World... ...Space->Wharf Rat->Franklin's Tower->Sugar Magnolia, Werewolves of London (!)
I'd like to thank 'Fresh Legs' for the kind Matrix of this show - check out their webpage: https://freshdeadlegs.wordpress.com/ and on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/freshdeadlegs.
UPDATE: This show officially released on 5/13/16 as "Red Rocks: 7/8/78" - check it out!

Stephen Urbauer's Grateful Dead Podcast #7 - 8/10/82 Iowa City
Sunday Feb 01, 2015
Sunday Feb 01, 2015
Hiya Folks!
Tonight felt like a good night to get comfy, and 8/10/82 fits like a favorite old sweater. This is 'Ragged - but Right' Grateful Dead for sure, but I find it enjoyable to say the least.
The first set in particular of this show is energetic, and high-spirited! Technical difficulties not withstanding (they lose 1/2 the PA during 'Must Have Been the Roses') it's a fine set of music. (Even the technical difficulties are handled in typical style - nobody seems to mind.)
8/10/82 - The Music:
Feel Like a Stranger, Friend of the Devil, Cassidy, It Must Have Been the Roses->PA trouble->On The Road Again->Beat It On Down The Line, Stagger Lee, I Need A Miracle->Bertha
Break
I've edited out the 'middle' of the second set for brevity's sake, there is a nice 'Eyes' in there as well - as always the entire show is available on the Live Music Archive. Here's the rest of the podcast:
China Cat Sunflower->I Know You Rider, Truckin'->Stella Blue->Sugar Magnolia, It's All Over Now Baby Blue->Johnny B Goode
This is an excellent Matrix recording, Matrix done by Hunter Seamons.

Stephen Urbauer's Grateful Dead Podcast #6 - 2/26/77
Wednesday Jan 28, 2015
Wednesday Jan 28, 2015
Hiya Folks!
Time for some rare and different tunes!
2/26/77 from the Swing Auditorium in San Bernadino, CA features the first ever versions of Terrapin Station, and Estimated Prophet, and is a really fine show overall.
I debated between using the straight 'Betty Board' soundboard or this Matrix recording from 2010 - the Betty Board sounds so fine on its own, but in the end the ambiance of the Matrix won out. (You can hear the Betty Board on it's own on the Live Music Archive site - just Google 2/26/77 Live Music Archive.)
The Music:
Terrapin Station, Minglewood Blues, They Love Each Other, Estimated Prophet
break
Eyes of the Word->Dancin' in the Streets->Around and Around
This is one of my all-time favs, hope you enjoy!

Stephen Urbauer's Grateful Dead Podcast #5 - 1/22/68
Friday Jan 23, 2015
Friday Jan 23, 2015
Hiya Folks!
For this episode I chose 1/22/68, from Eagles Auditorium in Seattle, WA.
This is one of the first shows of this era that I heard, and it's a fine example of 'Anthem of the Sun' era LiveDead.
It features very early versions of Dark Star (4th time played), China Cat Sunflower (2nd), The Eleven (2nd) and a whole bunch of really fine Feedback.
If you're not familiar with this era of the band - you're in for a treat.
This is a fine-sounding recording, SBD->Master Reels->DAT, Rob Eaton (Dark Star Orchestra) provided the DAT, mastered by Charlie Miller. One Caveat - there is a rather large patch that does not sound nearly as good as the rest of the recording (sounds mono, maybe with some FM static) - so sorry about that, but your patience will be rewarded!
Setlist:
Alligator->That's It For The Other One->New Potato Caboose->Born Cross-Eyed->Feedback->Spanish Jam->Dark Star->China Cat Sunflower->The Eleven->Caution (Do Not Stop On The Tracks)->Feedback->We Bid You Goodnight

Stephen Urbauer's Grateful Dead Podcast #4 - 1966!! :)
Sunday Jan 18, 2015
Sunday Jan 18, 2015
Hi Folks!
I'm SO EXCITED about this episode! When I first started thinking about doing this podcast I knew there would be one all about '66. What I didn't know was how much fun it would be to go back and re-listen to this music.
There was so much happening at the time - I touch on a couple things but there has already been so much written about these days that I encourage you to seek some of that stuff out if you haven't already. Bill Graham's biography and autobiography are both excellent. Tom Wolfe's "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" is essential reading. Then, of course, there are all the memoirs by and about the band themselves - I've read most of them and they all have their charms.
The Music:
7/16/66 Fillmore Auditorium San Francisco, CA
Viola Lee Blues, You Don't Have To Ask, Cold Rain & Snow, It's All Over Now Baby Blue
11/1/66 Fillmore Auditorium San Francisco, CA
Hi-Heel Sneakers, Beat It On Down The Line, Cream Puff War, He Was a Friend of Mine, Midnight Hour
Caveat - these recordings are both excellent, but they are not modern professional recordings. They are 49-year old archival recordings, and as such require a certain amount of willingness to 'play along'. Extreme stereo separation is present, especially on 7/16. Don't let that scare you off, this is good stuff - and you'll get used to it soon enough.
I had a Real Good Time putting this together, and I hope you enjoy!! Please follow on Facebook (NE GD Podcast), Twitter (@NEGDPodcast, and feel free to email with, um, Anything at negdpodcast@gmail.com.
Thanks again for stopping by, see you sometime!

Stephen Urbauer's Grateful Dead Podcast #3 - 8/21-22/93 Eugene
Wednesday Jan 14, 2015
Wednesday Jan 14, 2015
Hi Folks -
Episode #3 features 2nd set material from 8/21-22/93 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, OR.
I know what you're thinking: 'Really? '93?' Yep! Do yourself a favor and settle in for a really fine ride.
8/21 features my favorite 'Standing on the Moon' - if you think the Dead didn't have any 'muscle' in the 90's - this may change your mind.
8/22 has a great Help->Slip->Frank, and I left drums->space-> in because they're noteworthy. Days Between gets a good reading here.
These were day shows, and I believe the first Dead shows with Jerry playing the Cripe 'Lightning Bolt' guitar.
Intro
Crazy Otto
1993
Vince
Music:
China->Rider, Last Time->Standing on the Moon->One More Sat Night (8/21/93)
8/22 Intro
Help on the Way->Slipknot->Franklin's Tower, ...drums-Space->The Wheel->Miracle->Days Between (!) -> Not Fade
Outro
I hope you enjoy - please feel free to comment on Facebook, Twitter or email at negdpodcast@gmail.com!

Stephen Urbauer's Grateful Dead Podcast #2 - 1985 Shakedown Showdown!
Monday Jan 12, 2015
Monday Jan 12, 2015
Hi all!
Thanks for coming back for more Grateful Dead Music!
This episode features two smokin' 1985 Shakedown St.'s! I know it's sacrilege to have the same song twice in the same show, but I assure you there's a method to the madness.
6/30/85 and 11/21/85 - both unique, and fine examples of 1985 Dead.
I went with AUD recordings, I think you'll find they sound great - I hope you've got good headphones or a subwoofer to accurately re-create Phil's rig.
The podcast has a Facebook page now and Twitter account, feel free to email me at negdpodcast@gmail.com.
Thanks!!
